Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Book (and Your Life)
Posted By: JODY DYER
Have you ever heard a quiet voice in your mind whisper that you cannot do something? Sometimes that voice sounds like a parent, an old teacher, a former friend, or even a younger version of you.
For authors, especially those writing a book to share wisdom or grow a brand, this voice can become loud and limiting. The thoughts may seem small, but they shape your confidence, your habits, and your identity.
I am not a doctor or psychologist, but I am a mother, a teacher, and a coach. I have watched this transformation happen in dozens of clients and students. When writers begin to notice the connection between their thoughts and their outcomes, something powerful happens. They change.
Here is the cycle I have learned and practiced myself:
-
You have an experience.
-
Your body reacts, which stirs emotion.
-
Your emotions create thoughts.
-
Your thoughts, if repeated, become beliefs.
Those beliefs drive your decisions. They shape how you show up in the world. And sometimes, those beliefs are completely wrong.
The good news is that you have the power to create new thoughts. You can repeat those new thoughts until they become new beliefs, ones that are positive, honest, and productive.
Let me give you an example.
Ann’s Story: From Shame to Series
Ann wrote a book report in fifth grade and bravely read it aloud. The students laughed. The teacher gave her a grade of C. She had never earned a grade that low before, and the experience humiliated her.
Ann had loved writing. She was proud of that report. But that moment created pain. She told herself that she was not a good writer and that sharing her ideas would only bring embarrassment. Over time, those thoughts became her belief system.
Decades passed. Ann built a successful business career and retired with a desire to write a book that would help young women entering the workforce. But when she sat down to write, the old voices returned.
Who do you think you are?
What makes you think you can write a book?
People will laugh at you.
No one will buy it.
The inner resistance became so strong that she gave up.
Then Ann met a publisher who listened to her story. The publisher said, “That is an easy fix. You need to tell your subconscious something different. Say it until you believe it. Then act like the person you are becoming, not the person you are afraid you are.”
Together, they rewrote the narrative:
-
“Who do you think you are?” became “I am a successful businesswoman with valuable wisdom to share.”
-
“What makes you think you can write a book?” became “I have strong communication skills and 40 years of experience.”
-
“People will laugh at you” became “My ideal readers will appreciate my effort and benefit from my help.”
-
“No one will buy the book” became “If I help one young woman feel confident and empowered, I have succeeded.”
Ann created a writing routine and stayed consistent. She published her book one year later. Within two years, she received hundreds of messages from young professional women who thanked her for having the courage to write it.
She is now working on a series.
